I think throughout a person’s life they will unfortunately be the source of bias, prejudice, and oppression or witness someone else as the target of these things. These encounters can be seen in online environments as well as fictional ones such as moves, books, and television shows.
One movie that I saw that really showed me bias, prejudice and oppression was the movie, “The Help”. This movie shows so much bias, prejudice, and oppression that it was able to bring me into it and made me feel like I actually experienced it.
This movie diminished equity by first showing how black individuals of that time are viewed and talked to. It also showed how a society stigma diminishes friendships between the maids and the little girls and then when the little girls grow up, they lose that relationship. That diminished equity by looking at person’s worth and how the relationships change, based on the more popular or dominant view.
The emotions this situation provoked in me was very hurt and negative. I could not ever imagine having someone basically raise me and then disowning them because of society views. I did get into the viewpoint of both parties and can understand what happened with both people. Basically, the society pressure with prejudice and bias against race played into their relationship.
In the end, the book is published that does star to be change and order to turn this incident into opportunity for greater equity. It will be this and other radical individuals that are willing to stand out and take charge and show that a bias, prejudice, and oppression like this is not right, diminishes equity, and respects the human race.
This is a fabulous example, I was going to use this as an example as well,as it had just been on this week. This is a perfect example of how equity can turned around to bring out the positive teaching that came from this movie.
ReplyDeleteI also saw this movie and you are right about how the movie portrays the different races, this is how many people were raised and they in turn passed it down to their children. This movie made me very sad and upset to see how the little girls grew up to treat the very people that cared for them. I read the book first and then saw the movie and I have lived in many places and seen this treatment around me. While living in North Carolina a person had to be careful to not say or do the wrong thing because the Klu Klux Klan still is very much around in the area I was living. A person had to be careful of where they went and with whom they were seen with and nobody should have that power over another.
ReplyDeleteI agree make or break us. Hopefully, we become better people with you that we will all at some point become the subject of bias, prejudice, or oppression. It is how we respond and act as a result that can make all the difference in the world. While I have not seen the movie The Help, it reminded me of a movie I did see. I believe the title is Beyond the Blackboard and it is a movie about children in a homeless shelter being taught but having disadvantages (no textbooks desks materials etc.) until this teacher comes along and fights for them and works with the parents learning to be important. The situations we face can often for the situations we face.
ReplyDeleteAbigail I also watch this movie it made me very upset how the people were not concern about the child feelings at all. The little girl felt comfortable with the maid because the mother did not have time to take care of the little girl. The people in the movie were very disrespectful to each other and prejudice to each other also. This kind of issues is a lesson for all of us to respect each other and teacher our children to respect also. Good topic!
